TBAFund details funding gaps as caller volume increases year over year
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TAMPA, Fla — April 30, 2026 — Tampa Bay Abortion Fund (TBAFund) is providing an update on the financial and logistical challenges it is helping Florida abortion-seekers overcome as we mark the two-year anniversary of Florida’s six-week abortion ban on May 1.
Between May 1, 2024, and March 30, 2026, TBAFund has funded over $1.43 million in appointment costs for more than 3,700 people seeking abortions at eight Tampa Bay-area clinics and select clinics outside of Florida. Additionally, the organization has provided over $146,000 in practical support — including flights, hotels, and rideshares — to abortion-seekers locally and those forced to travel out of state for their abortion.
Despite the state’s six-week ban creating additional unnecessary barriers to care, TBAFund has seen a growth in call volume each year since its implementation, including from individuals able to seek care in Florida. In fact, 88% of the callers TBAFund have funded since the ban went into effect have had their abortion in Florida before reaching six weeks estimated gestational age (EGA).
“It might be surprising that most of our callers successfully have their abortions in Florida, but we think that demonstrates the power of community,” said Bree Wallace, Director of Case Management at TBAFund. “It’s exciting to see people spread the word about TBAFund and Florida’s five other abortion funds, which helps us quickly get abortion-seekers the care they need, ideally close to home.”
In 2025, TBAFund set new annual records for funding and clients supported. Some highlights include:
- 3,133 abortion-seekers supported with appointment funding and/or practical support, a 41% increase from 2024.
- $860,000 paid toward clinic costs for callers’ appointments — up from $566,000 in 2024 — with an average appointment pledge of $350.
- 612 Floridians provided with 6,100 months worth of Opill contraception through TBAFund’s mailed Reproductive Health Kits.
- 5,300 emergency contraceptive pills and 7,500 condoms distributed through community events and community partners across the Tampa Bay area.
So far in 2026, TBAFund has pledged over $343,000 in appointment costs to 1,365 callers. While the organization is on track for another record-breaking year, like many abortion funds around the country, it is seeing need outpace resources. Based on year-to-date volumes, TBAFund estimates caller need for appointment funding could reach $1,029,000 by the end of 2026 — beyond what the organization’s current incoming funding would support. The organization closed its intake line on April 23, reopening May 1, after reaching its monthly budget early.
“We are enormously proud to help people in the Tampa Bay area get access to the abortion care they need and are working diligently to break down as many barriers as possible, but we can’t do it alone,” said Kris Lawler, executive director of TBAFund. “Over the past few years, our local community has stepped up in a huge way. Individual donations now make up more than half of our organization’s funding. But across the abortion funding landscape, we’ve seen institutional giving decrease post-Dobbs and post-election, even lower than it was before. We’re now calling on the philanthropic community to consider giving to organizations like TBAFund and other abortion funds that are making a real difference in the lives of Floridians every day.”
TBAFund is in the midst of its annual Fund-a-Thon fundraising campaign, with a goal of raising $60,000 by May 31. To donate, visit TBAFund’s campaign page.
